Excerpt from philadelphia.cbslocal.com story by Paul Kurtz:
"Students at a North Philadelphia charter school were breaking bread today with 12 students from Latvia.
The National Constitution Center arranged this “meet, greet, and eat” at the People for People Charter School through a collaboration with acclaimed chef Marc Vetri, whose foundation feeds the students five days a week.
André Williams, the school’s director of operations, says Vetri’s “Eatiquette” initiative tosses aside the school assembly line lunch in favor of a family style setting."
Excerpt from philadelphia.grubstreet.com story:
"Marc Vetri’s Eatiquette, a program the chef developed that revolutionizes school lunches, is possibly one of the very few good things happening in Philly schools right now. And sadly, as the School District of Philadelphia continues its downhill skid toward certain doom, only two area schools, both of which are charter schools, have adopted the Vetri approach to cafeteria operations."

The latest issue of Philadelphia Magazine features an article on Vetri Foundation and the Eatiquette program.
"...Eating at the Kitchen Table feels like eating at home, if eating at home were perfect. Before the meal, either Vetri or Michaud will pop by to discuss the feast they’ve readied. It’s one thing to dig into superbly roasted quail, rabbit or venison; it’s quite another to first have the chef explain why he seasoned it with treviso, or sage, or cranberry. As for etiquette, you dine family-style at the Kitchen Table, passing plates and bowls with happy abandon. You love what’s on your fork? Have more! Not to your liking? Don’t fret—a different platter is making the rounds. The atmosphere is both comforting and adventurous, and conversation flows as everyone relaxes into an experience that feels like an idealized version of the family dinner.
Sounds wonderful, right? But what does this have to do with kids’ lunches?"

In an effort to improve 12 elementary schools in the School District of Philadelphia, Christine Carlson has created the Greater Center City Neighborhood School Coalition.
The Coalition looks to "raise money, save programs, improve curriculum, and fix facilities - and in doing so, anchor those parents to their neighborhoods."
It's a tall task, and one that the Coalition needs help with. The Vetri Foundation for Children has decided to join in the efforts, alongside other groups like the Opera Company of Philadelphia and The Clay Studio.
